Hardie & Fibre Cement Siding in Calgary

Fibre cement is a mix of cement, sand and cellulose fibres pressed into planks, panels and shingles. Most people call it Hardie board, after James Hardie, the best-known manufacturer, but several brands make it. Sidhu Siding Ltd. installs and replaces fibre cement siding on Calgary-area homes. Available brands and profiles vary, and your written quote spells out exactly what is going on your walls.

Why fibre cement suits Calgary hail and freeze-thaw

Fibre cement is dense and stiff, so it does not soften in summer heat or turn brittle at -30 C the way some vinyl can, and it moves less than vinyl through the big temperature swings of a chinook. It generally takes hail better than vinyl, which can crack or shatter, and it is non-combustible, which counts on tight lots where houses sit close together. It is not hail-proof: a severe storm can still chip boards or damage the painted finish. It is also heavy and unforgiving to install, so correct flashing, fastening into the framing and sealed cut edges matter more than they do with lighter materials.

    Options We Install and Repair

    Lap siding (horizontal planks)

The classic clapboard look, available in smooth and wood-grain textures and a range of exposures.

    Shingle and shake-style panels

A cedar-shake look without the rot, often used on gables and accent areas.

    Vertical panels and board-and-batten

A cleaner, more modern look, popular on gables and as a contrast to lap siding.

    Factory-finished or primed

Factory-finished boards hold colour well and need less on-site work. Primed boards are painted after install and offer more colour choice.

    How the Work Goes

We remove the old siding, inspect and repair the sheathing underneath, then install house wrap, window and door flashing, and the fibre cement boards fastened to the framing as the manufacturer specifies. Cut edges are sealed, trim and corners go on last, and the site is cleaned daily.

    Fibre Cement (Hardie) Siding FAQ

Is fibre cement more expensive than vinyl?

Usually, yes. The boards are heavier and take more labour to install. In return you generally get a stiffer, more impact-resistant and fire-resistant wall that holds a painted finish. We can itemize both on your quote so you can compare.

    Is Hardie board hail-proof?

No siding is. Fibre cement generally resists hail better than standard vinyl, but a severe storm can still chip boards or damage the finish. If you have hail damage, ask us for an inspection and a written scope of repairs for your insurer.

What maintenance does fibre cement need?

Check caulk joints and painted surfaces every year or two, and touch up chips so moisture cannot get at the board. Repainting intervals depend on the finish and the manufacturer's guidance.

Can fibre cement go over my existing siding?

We normally remove the old siding so the wall can be inspected and wrapped properly. Fibre cement is heavy and needs solid fastening into the framing, and covering damp or rotted sheathing only hides the problem.
